In Letterkenny, staff at Chime are actively participating in the International Week of Deaf People, which runs from September 22 to September 28, 2023. This global initiative aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the deaf community and promote the rich culture associated with it. In celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, the team hosted an Irish Sign Language (ISL) coffee morning, creating an engaging platform to support and advocate for ISL as one of Ireland’s national languages.

The coffee morning provided an opportunity for staff members to connect, share experiences, and demonstrate their commitment to recognizing the contributions of the Deaf community. Among those present were Victoria McHugh, information officer at Chime, Nicola Moore, a social worker, and Gerard Holmes, Community Resource Officer. Their participation underscored the importance of community support and cultural appreciation within the deaf advocacy space.

In addition to the coffee morning, Chime is launching an innovative collaboration with Dublin Zoo. The initiative will feature Irish Sign Language-interpreted videos for visitors, enhancing accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Visitors will have the opportunity to scan QR codes located at selected animal habitats, leading them to Zookeeper talks available in ISL on the Dublin Zoo website. This initiative not only enriches the visitor experience but also aligns with Chime’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for all.

For those seeking further information about Chime’s support services for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and their families, additional resources can be found at the organization’s website: https://www.chime.ie/Get-Support.

As International Week of Deaf People unfolds, Chime’s initiatives highlight the importance of community engagement, cultural recognition, and the ongoing need for accessible resources for the Deaf community.
