Community Bids Farewell to Beloved Teacher and Manager Ollie Horgan

A community came together in Letterkenny to honor the life of teacher and football manager Ollie Horgan, who passed away on August 28, 2023, at the age of 57. Horgan, a prominent figure in both education and sports, died following a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy that resonated deeply with those who knew him.

A memorial service was held at St Eunan’s College, where Horgan had taught since 1989. As a physical education and mathematics teacher, he was not only a mentor to his students but also a friend and confidant to his colleagues. The service featured poignant tributes, with items symbolizing his life placed on the altar, including a football, a whistle, and a school jersey.

Horgan was born in Salthill, Galway, and made a significant impact on the local football scene. He played for Fanad United and later managed the team for six years. In 2013, he took over as manager of Finn Harps FC, becoming the longest-serving manager in the club’s history with nine seasons. Most recently, he served as assistant manager at Galway United before stepping down earlier this month.

During the memorial, staff member Gracie Peoples delivered an emotional reflection on Horgan’s character. She described him as a man who embodied “the warmth and wit of the west and the rugged loyalty of the northwest.” She emphasized that he was more than just an educator; he was a guide and mentor who inspired resilience, respect, and heart in his students.

Peoples remarked, “Ollie gave his all with patience, good humour, and an unwavering belief in every student and player he met.” She noted that he was a humble individual who never sought the spotlight but naturally drew people to him through his actions and kindness. His legacy, she stated, is not measured by trophies but by the lives he touched and the example he set.

School principal Damien McCroary also paid tribute to Horgan, recalling him as a “wonderful colleague” who brought laughter and joy to the school. McCroary noted that Horgan’s modesty often led him to downplay compliments, yet on the football pitch, his passion was undeniable. He described Horgan as “a friend” and “a man of many talents” who educated countless young men throughout his career.

During the homily, Fr Damien Nejad remarked on Horgan’s substantial impact on his students, recalling how he discreetly supported those in need, from providing uniforms to helping them find part-time jobs. Nejad highlighted Horgan’s dedication to his students’ welfare, both physically and mentally.

As the ceremony concluded, a rendition of “This is my homeland” echoed through the hall, serving as a fitting tribute to a man who was at home not only in Galway but also in Donegal. Horgan’s funeral will take place on Monday, with his remains reposing at the family home in Cahermorris and later at O’Flaherty Funeral Parlour in Galway. The Requiem Mass will be celebrated at Church of Christ the King in Salthill before burial at Rahoon Cemetery.

Horgan is survived by his wife, Anita, and their children, as well as his siblings and extended family. His legacy as a dedicated educator and passionate football manager will continue to inspire those who knew him, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many in Donegal and beyond.
