A community in Galway is in mourning following the tragic death of 17-year-old Adam Nagajek, a student at Clarin College Athenry. Adam passed away peacefully at home on October 19, 2023, surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with cancer. His unexpected passing has left a profound sense of loss among family, friends, and the school community.

Adam was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, at the age of nine. Following extensive treatment, including surgery, he celebrated six years of being cancer-free in April 2022. Unfortunately, in October 2022, he experienced a relapse, leading to a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time affecting his lung. In November 2022, he underwent surgery at University Hospital Galway to remove a lower lobe of his lung.

The challenges continued as Adam faced a new tumor on his spine in May 2023, which ultimately became inoperable. Throughout his illness, he remained dedicated to his passion for music, forming the band Tallon through Galway’s School of Rock programme. The band participated in the Irish Youth Music Awards and held a fundraising concert in August 2023 to support Adam’s treatment.

His musical talent shone brightly, and he was a self-taught drummer who was a finalist in the previous year’s Young Drummer of the Year competition. Adam’s contributions to the music community and his uplifting spirit made him a beloved figure at Clarin College.

Heartfelt Tributes from Clarin College

Following his death, Acting Principal Susan McCann issued a heartfelt tribute on the school’s website. She expressed deep condolences to Adam’s family and highlighted his impact on the school, stating: “Adam was a brilliant musician and drummer, and a proud member of the band Tallon. He contributed so much to our school community through his music, his involvement in school musicals, and his positive and uplifting nature.”

Numerous staff members shared their sorrow, with one teacher reflecting on Adam’s warm personality and the positivity he brought to those around him. Another remarked on his conscientious nature and eagerness to learn, emphasizing the significant void his absence will create.

Deputy Principal Louise Flaherty noted Adam’s exceptional talent and passion for music, stating that his legacy will resonate within the halls of Clarin College. “He will be deeply missed,” she added.

A private cremation service was conducted for Adam at Shannon Crematorium. A funeral mass is scheduled for October 25, 2023, at St. Oliver Plunkett Church in Renmore, followed by the interment of his ashes at Rinville Cemetery in Oranmore.

As the community comes together to remember Adam, a book of condolence has been opened at the school for those wishing to express their sympathies. His legacy as a kind, talented, and thoughtful young man will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
