The community of Letterkenny is in mourning following the death of former town councillor and local figurehead, Victor Fisher, who passed away at the age of 85 at his residence in Anfield Grove, Kiltoy. Fisher’s contributions to the town spanned decades, encompassing politics, business, and sports, and he leaves behind a legacy that has deeply impacted many lives.

Born in Ramelton in 1940 to George Fisher and Frances Donnelly, Victor moved to Letterkenny with his family at the age of six. Throughout his life, he proudly identified as a “Letterkenny man” and worked tirelessly to enhance the community. His political career was notably marked by his three terms as mayor, a role he cherished greatly.

In 1969, Fisher joined the Fianna Fáil party, having been encouraged by Senator Bernard McGlinchey. He was elected to the Letterkenny Urban District Council seven consecutive times, retiring undefeated and leaving a significant mark on local governance.

Fisher’s influence extended beyond politics; he was also an avid sports enthusiast. He had a particular passion for football, supporting Liverpool FC passionately, even naming his family home “Anfield” in homage to the club. His involvement with local football clubs included a 30-year tenure with Finn Harps and being elected Honorary President of Letterkenny Rovers in 2023.

His business acumen was evident in his long-standing role at Harris’ Shop on Main Street, followed by the establishment of his own venture, Victor’s Gift Shop, near the Post Office. Even after the disbandment of the Town Council, Fisher remained active within the community, often seen selling lottery tickets and engaging with residents.

Victor Fisher’s family includes his wife, Helen, daughter Mairead (Jonny), sons David (Justine), Kevin (Clara), and Barry, along with several grandchildren and a great-grandson named Leo. His sister, Eileen, resides in Hull, and he is also mourned by numerous relatives, friends, and community members.

The Funeral Mass for Victor Fisher is scheduled for Sunday, September 14, 2023, at St Eunan’s Cathedral. The family will receive visitors at their home from 11:00 on Saturday until noon on Sunday, followed by the funeral service at 13:30. Interment will take place at New Leck Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Donegal Hospice through Paschal Blake Funeral Director in Letterkenny.

Fisher’s legacy remains not only in his political achievements but also in the warmth of his community connections and devotion to local sports. His passing marks the end of an era for Letterkenny, where he will be remembered as a dedicated leader and cherished friend.
