A community in Kildare Town is coming together to support the Dempsey family following the tragic death of Leighanne Dempsey. Leighanne passed away on August 1, 2025, after battling brain cancer, leaving behind her husband, Shane Dempsey, and their three children: Molly, Jack, and Shane’s stepdaughter, Hannah.

In the wake of this profound loss, friends and family have launched a fundraising campaign to alleviate the financial burden on Shane, who is now solely responsible for the family’s day-to-day expenses. The fundraiser, organized by family friend Tomas Gallagher, aims to raise €30,000 to help cover mortgage payments and other costs that have become overwhelming after Leighanne’s passing.

Shane, a member of the Irish Defence Forces, has dedicated himself to caring for his children during this difficult time. He has faced the challenge of managing his grief while also supporting Molly, who has additional needs, and Jack, who started Junior Infants just one month after losing his mother.

Gallagher described Leighanne as a compassionate and giving individual, who actively participated in local neurodiversity parenting groups. Her contributions to the community left a lasting impact, and those who knew her are rallying to ensure her family’s well-being.

In a heartfelt message shared on the GoFundMe page, Shane expressed his gratitude and the challenges his family faces: “The Dempsey family lost their beloved Leighanne on August 1, 2025, following her treatment for brain cancer. Since the loss of Leighanne, I have prioritised caring for my children, supporting Molly and Jack, who is facing his first year of school without his Mammy.”

So far, the GoFundMe campaign has raised over €1,200, a small step towards the ambitious target of €30,000. Shane continues to navigate the complexities of single parenthood while managing household finances.

He emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Leighanne was a kind, caring member of her wider community. Please support her family now; any donation, large or small, is much appreciated.”

For those wishing to contribute, donations can be made on the GoFundMe page to provide vital assistance to the Dempsey family during this challenging time.
