Cork School Celebrates Principal’s Retirement After 35 Years
Colm Ó Corcora, the principal of Coláiste an Chroí Naofa in Carrignavar, Cork, concluded his distinguished career in education on October 4, 2023. After dedicating 35 years to teaching, with the last decade spent as principal, Ó Corcora received a heartfelt farewell from staff and students as he embarks on his retirement.
The day was marked by a moving ceremony that featured a guard of honour, where students and faculty lined up to applaud their beloved principal. Staff members spoke warmly about Ó Corcora’s impact on the school community. They described him as a leader who combined a gentle demeanor with unwavering determination. According to a staff member, “Colm is renowned for his gentle and caring nature, while also having the determination to always get the job done.”
Throughout his tenure, Ó Corcora upheld the principle of “no child left behind,” ensuring that every student had the support needed to reach their goals. His approachable nature set him apart, allowing staff and students to share their concerns openly. The same staff member noted, “It is rare for staff or students to feel they can laugh, share troubles, or confide in someone in such a position of authority.”
As he transitions into this new chapter of his life, the school community expressed deep gratitude for his decades of dedication, compassion, and leadership. Past student Abigail, who recently completed her Leaving Cert, reflected on Ó Corcora’s influence, stating, “I wouldn’t have made it anywhere close to the end of school without the support.”
The farewell for Ó Corcora is part of a broader tradition in Cork, where beloved educators are celebrated as they retire. Last year, students at Scoil Padre Pio in Churchfield bid farewell to their principal, Ken Foley, with a similar display of affection. In addition, students at Glanmire Community College recently honored their long-time deputy principal, Seanie McGrath, in a musical tribute.
As the community reflects on Colm Ó Corcora’s contributions, it is clear that his legacy will endure in the hearts of those he has inspired throughout his remarkable career. His commitment to education and the well-being of his students has profoundly shaped the lives of many, and his retirement marks the end of an era for Coláiste an Chroí Naofa.
