Experience the Magic of Opera at Verona’s Iconic Arena

A family visiting from Lake Garda recently attended a stunning performance of *Carmen* at the historic Arena di Verona, underscoring the venue’s reputation as a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Italy. The open-air amphitheater, steeped in history, provided a breathtaking backdrop for the opera, which is staged in this iconic location for the 30th consecutive year.
The experience began just before 21:00 on a beautiful summer evening, with the Arena buzzing with anticipation. The venue, though smaller than some other famous arenas such as the San Siro in Milan or the Melbourne Cricket Ground, boasts a rich architectural heritage that captivates audiences. The family, while not opera aficionados, felt the electric atmosphere as they settled into their seats close to the stage, ready to witness a production featuring over 500 artists.
As the performance commenced, the audience was instantly engaged. Although sung in Italian, English translations displayed on screens throughout the venue allowed attendees to follow the story seamlessly. The two boys, aged 11 and 13, initially seemed patient, their phones tucked away for the evening. Nevertheless, the late start of the show, which began at 21:30, posed a challenge for the young audience.
The first interval did not occur until after 22:30, with a second break pushing the performance close to midnight. While audiences from mainland Europe are accustomed to late-night events, the family felt the strain of the hour. A short walk back to their hotel in Verona concluded the evening, leaving them with mixed feelings. They regretted missing the end of *Carmen* but were thrilled to have immersed themselves in a unique cultural experience within the stunning surroundings of the Arena di Verona.
The family left the performance with a newfound appreciation for the operatic tradition, agreeing with the arena’s slogan that one cannot claim to have visited Italy without experiencing its opera. The Arena di Verona Opera Festival continues until **September 6, 2023**, featuring other classics such as *Nabucco*, *Aida*, *La Traviata*, and *Rigoletto*. Tickets for the 2026 Opera Festivals are already available on the official website, www.arena.it.
Opera lovers and curious travelers alike are encouraged to embrace this opportunity to witness remarkable performances in one of Italy’s most celebrated venues.
