Motorcycle enthusiasts seeking an exhilarating adventure should consider a ride along the stunning coastline of Achill Island, a gem located off the west coast of Ireland. This route, part of the renowned Wild Atlantic Way, offers breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience for riders of all skill levels.

The journey begins at Moranny, where riders head towards Achill Sound, crossing the bridge to the island. Although the initial road from Moranny is less than ideal, the scenery quickly compensates for any rough patches. After approximately 500 yards from Achill Sound, bikers will find the sign marking the start of the Wild Atlantic Way. A left turn here opens up a spectacular coastal route that demands frequent stops to fully appreciate the magnificent views of the Atlantic waves crashing against the cliffs.

As riders navigate this stretch, it is essential to remain cautious, as the area is largely devoid of traffic, with perhaps only a car or tractor encountered along the way to Dooega. The serene environment, coupled with occasional strong winds, provides a thrilling yet calming experience. Following the right turn at Dooega, riders will traverse the island’s interior, eventually reaching the main road leading to Keem Beach. While the section from Achill Sound to Keel may not be the highlight of the journey, the road from Keel to Keem Beach is a true delight for motorcyclists, featuring sharp bends and steep descents that test both skill and equipment.

Keem Beach itself is a picturesque spot, with a steep road that challenges riders’ brakes and nerves. Throughout the journey, it is crucial to remain vigilant for the local short-horned sheep, which can unexpectedly wander onto the roads.

Retracing the route back to Keel is straightforward, as there is only one main road. From Keel, a fork to the left leads to Dugort, the northernmost beach on the island, known for its beach saunas and welcoming establishments. The beauty of Achill Island lies in its simplicity; all roads eventually connect back to Achill Sound, making navigation easy.

For fans of cinema, Achill Island also served as a filming location for the acclaimed movie The Banshees of Inisherin. Riders interested in exploring these scenic spots can follow the designated location trail marked throughout the area.

For those planning to explore Achill Island, it is advisable to book accommodations in advance. Numerous B&Bs and small hotels are available, providing an opportunity to fully immerse oneself in the island’s beauty over a couple of days.

In addition to the stunning scenery, motorcyclists can consider testing out the new Harley Pan American 1250 ST, a model designed for street and touring rather than off-road adventures. Recently tested by Liam Gaskin, the Pan American features an adjustable seat height, making it accessible for riders of various heights. Its digital display offers comprehensive information, including tire pressure and road conditions, enhancing the riding experience.

With three ride settings—Fast, Normal, and Wet—and standard ABS, the Pan American delivers impressive performance. Gaskin noted its smooth handling and responsive acceleration, allowing riders to enjoy the thrill of cruising at high speeds.

As he returned the bike to the dealership, Gaskin remarked on its exceptional performance, comparing the ride to that of a luxury vehicle, albeit with a more subdued sound than traditional Harleys.

For those considering long-distance motorcycle adventures, companies like Extreme Bike Tours offer guided excursions through picturesque landscapes worldwide. With a reputation built over 15 years, these tours include all-inclusive packages that allow riders to explore iconic routes, whether in India, Mongolia, or the Himalayas.

Riding a motorcycle provides not only a sense of freedom but also an exhilarating way to explore new terrains. Achill Island, with its stunning vistas and welcoming atmosphere, is a top destination for those looking to enjoy the ride of a lifetime.
