Former Taoiseach’s Rathmines Home Sold for €3.75 Million

The historic residence of former Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald at 30 Palmerston Road in Rathmines has been sold for €3.75 million. The property, now owned by his son, Mark FitzGerald, co-founder of the esteemed estate agency Sherry FitzGerald, has been in the family since 1976.
Garret FitzGerald and his wife, Joan FitzGerald, moved into the home as Garret served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs in a coalition government led by Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave. At that time, Mark was just a teenager, beginning his career as a trainee estate agent in Dublin. Over the years, Garret FitzGerald rose to become a prominent leader of Fine Gael, holding the office of Taoiseach twice.
The FitzGeralds have maintained ownership of the property for nearly five decades, with Mark and his wife, Derval, taking over in 1993. Mark reflects on his childhood in the house, recalling vibrant gatherings that included notable guests like John Hume and Bono. The atmosphere was not solely celebratory; it was also a time of significant political turbulence as Garret navigated economic crises and participated in the negotiations leading to the 1985 Anglo-Irish Agreement.
Historical Charm Meets Modern Luxury
Built in 1879 by John Regan, the two-storey-over-basement Victorian home spans approximately 362 square meters (around 3,900 square feet). It has undergone several renovations, the most recent in 2022, which modernized the living spaces while preserving its elegant character.
Mark notes that the family has experienced numerous transformations within the home, having “had about six kitchens,” according to Derval. The property now features contemporary conveniences, including central heating and a recently upgraded lift.
The house boasts a striking entrance with a mature garden, providing parking for up to four cars. Inside, polished timber floors, high ceilings with ornate coving, and original fireplaces enhance the home’s historical allure. The living areas offer ample space, including a formal dining room and a bright reading alcove filled with Mark’s antique editions of Thom’s Directory, a thorough collection of Dublin’s streets and residents.
On the upper floors, the main bedroom features two sash windows and an en-suite bathroom, while the second and third bedrooms also include modern amenities. The second-floor return offers a charming double room, complete with a desk and Velux window, while a family shower room and a laundry room add practicality to the residence.
Outdoor Living and Modern Amenities
The garden level features a private entrance, pantry, and an expansive kitchen/breakfast room. This space is equipped with solid wood flooring and a bespoke kitchen designed by Derek Heaney of the Cabinet Company, complete with Corian countertops and ample storage.
The outdoor area captures significant sunlight, showcasing a well-maintained lawn surrounded by mature borders filled with flowering plants. An electronic awning over the sandstone patio allows for comfortable outdoor dining, complemented by overhead heaters for cooler evenings.
Overall, 30 Palmerston Road represents not only a family legacy but also a testament to the FitzGeralds’ enduring connection to Dublin’s political and social landscape. The new owners will find a luxurious, well-appointed home ready for their own stories and memories.
