Fr Jim Murphy Celebrates 21 Years of Service at St Canice’s
In August 2023, the community of St Canice’s Parish in Kilkenny gathered to celebrate the final Sunday mass led by Fr Jim Murphy, marking the end of his 21-year tenure. Emotions ran high as parishioners reflected on the significant impact he made during his time in the role. Fr Murphy expressed his feelings, stating, “It’s inevitable you’d be emotional, but I try to keep it light-hearted, because I didn’t want people to be drowning in sorrow.”
Throughout his two decades of service, Fr Murphy engaged deeply with the community, fostering connections through shared conversations and family events. He fondly recalled the church’s renovation as a defining moment, noting, “That was a huge event… the church belongs to all of us.” His emphasis on community was clear as he stated, “The people make the church, not buildings.”
Fr Murphy’s ministry was characterized by a commitment to care and inspiration, aiming to embody the values of the Gospel. “It’s really sharing your life,” he explained, highlighting the importance of being fully dedicated to serving both the church and the people of God. With over 50 years in the priesthood, his journey has been marked by cherished memories and significant sacrifices.
In reflecting on his responsibilities, Fr Murphy noted the emotional challenges of his role, particularly in sensitive situations. He shared experiences of assisting local authorities, stating, “The gardaí would avail of my services to comfort people and to bring the news.” He acknowledged the need to maintain a professional distance, explaining, “You can’t become emotionally involved; it would wreck you if you did.”
As he prepares for a new chapter, Fr Murphy will transition to Thomastown, where he will assist with chaplaincy at Grennan College and St Columba’s Hospital, while continuing his service at Loreto and CBS Kilkenny. “I’m looking forward to it. I’ll have time to do a bit of gardening,” he remarked, hinting at a potential return to beekeeping after many years.
Fr Jim Murphy’s dedicated service has left an indelible mark on the parish of St Canice’s, and his new journey promises to bring further contributions to the communities he will serve.
