The Friends of the Hunt Museum initiated a significant new tradition with the launch of the inaugural Hunt Family Memorial Lecture on September 18, 2023. This event, held at the Hunt Museum in Limerick, aims to honour the contributions of John and Gertrude Hunt, whose extensive private collection laid the groundwork for the museum.

The opening lecture, titled “The Irish Country House: A New Vision,” was delivered by renowned author and architectural historian Robert O’Byrne. In his talk, O’Byrne examined the shifting perceptions of Ireland’s historic country houses, transitioning from symbols of decay to celebrated sites of restoration and renewed family life. He provided a fresh narrative that highlights the histories and recoveries of some of Ireland’s most distinguished historic residences.

O’Byrne, a former Vice-President of the Irish Georgian Society and a trustee of several heritage foundations, is well-regarded for his contributions to the field. He has authored over a dozen books and operates the award-winning blog, ‘The Irish Aesthete.’ Currently, he is completing a doctorate at Trinity College Dublin, further establishing his expertise in architectural history.

Following the lecture, attendees enjoyed a vibrant reception that featured canapés and live music from Arno Kilhoffer and Nora Casey. This festive gathering provided a delightful conclusion to an enlightening afternoon, fostering connections among those who appreciate the cultural and historical significance of the Hunt Museum.

The Friends of the Hunt Museum, which organized the lecture, expressed their commitment to making the Hunt Family Memorial Lecture a yearly event. This initiative is envisioned as a platform to celebrate Irish culture, history, and the lasting legacy of the Hunts, ensuring their contributions are remembered and appreciated for generations to come.
