GAA Couple Celebrates Their Dream Wedding in Cork, Ireland
Sinéad O’Halloran and Fergus Gahan celebrated their wedding in a heartfelt ceremony at Honan Chapel, University College Cork, marking a significant milestone in their relationship that began on a GAA pitch in New Zealand. The couple exchanged vows in August 2023, surrounded by family and friends, concluding a journey that began in Auckland, where they first met in 2019.
Sinéad, originally from Ennis, Co Clare, described her feelings as she walked down the aisle: “I’d probably compare it to the feeling just before playing a county final — that mix of excitement and calm confidence.” Fergus, hailing from Gorey, Co Wexford, proposed to Sinéad on Christmas Eve 2023 during a hike at Whangārei Heads, an occasion made memorable by a stunning view and an ice cream stop.
The couple chose to celebrate their wedding in Kinsale, a location rich in personal significance. Sinéad studied at University College Cork, while Fergus spent four years living and playing GAA in the town, working alongside renowned designers and historians. Their ceremony was officiated by Fergus’s uncle, Rev Fr Raymond Gahan, who performed the last wedding of his career before retirement.
- The reception took place at the Trident Hotel, where the couple praised the staff for exceeding their expectations.
- With 99 guests in attendance, the celebration was intimate yet lively, featuring a wedding band, The Brass Monkeys, who kept the dance floor active throughout the evening.
Sinéad’s bridesmaid was her sister, Aishling O’Halloran, while Fergus’s brother, Paul Gahan, served as best man. The couple embraced a “relaxed Kiwi approach” to their wedding, opting for a more informal atmosphere while ensuring their families were central to the celebration.
Sinéad found her wedding dress at Felicity Bridal in Auckland, stating, “In the end, I found I was much more comfortable going to fittings on my own.” Fergus chose a suit from Tango’s Dress Hire in Dublin. The hair and makeup were expertly handled by local talents Christine O’Sullivan and Christine O’Connor from Cork.
The couple also highlighted the contributions of Jakub Walutek Photography and Uray Weddings, who captured their special day. Floral arrangements were provided by Daisy Chain in Kinsale, adding to the venue’s charm.
As they embark on their honeymoon in Tasmania over Christmas, Sinéad and Fergus continue their lives together in Auckland. Sinéad works as an occupational therapist in a community stroke rehabilitation service, while Fergus is a director at Adaptable Consulting, leading teams to deliver innovative digital solutions. Their wedding not only celebrated their love but also reflected their unique journey, combining elements from both their lives in New Zealand and their roots in Ireland.
