Three dedicated volunteers from Galway RNLI were honored with Long Service Awards for their exceptional commitment to the organization. The awards were presented during the One Crew Celebration, marking three decades since the establishment of the Galway Lifeboat Station. Les Perry received recognition for 20 years of service as the Volunteer Treasurer of the Fundraising Committee, while Barry Heskin and Shane Folan were acknowledged for their 30 years of volunteer work as lifeboat crew members.

The event brought together both current and former crew members who have volunteered over the past 30 years, celebrating their collective dedication to maritime safety. Anna Classon, RNLI Head of Region for Ireland, presented the awards, while Paul Carey, Acting Lifeboat Operations Manager, paid tribute to each recipient, highlighting their significant contributions.

Celebrating Lifelong Commitment to Rescue Operations

Paul Carey reflected on the journey of Les Perry, who grew up in Wexford and was inspired by the stories of volunteer work at Kilmore Quay RNLI. Before retiring from a successful career in the insurance industry, he sought guidance from his friend, Pat Lavelle, about joining as a volunteer. Perry has served as a dedicated Volunteer Treasurer for the Fundraising Committee for 20 years, handling various responsibilities that include collecting donations, banking, and sending out thank you cards, among other tasks.

Barry Heskin, another esteemed honoree, has dedicated 30 years to the lifeboat crew. Carey noted that Heskin has responded to numerous callouts and rescues, often in perilous conditions. He progressed to the role of Helm, where he led crews at sea, ensuring safe and effective rescue operations. Currently, he serves as a Launch Authority, providing crucial leadership from the shore to facilitate swift lifeboat launches when needed.

Pioneering Efforts and Community Contributions

The final Long Service Award was presented to Shane Folan, who also received recognition for 30 years of service. Folan holds the distinction of being the first officially enrolled volunteer crew member at the Galway Lifeboat Station, having joined on May 28, 1995. Throughout his tenure, he has excelled in various roles, earning the respect of his peers within the RNLI community. Currently, he serves as a Launch Authority, and he plays an active role in local maritime safety through his involvement with the Galway Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Committee.

In addition to his RNLI commitments, Folan is instrumental in ongoing efforts to introduce a new rescue craft on the River Corrib, further enhancing the safety and effectiveness of maritime operations in the area.

The evening of celebration underscored the profound impact these individuals have had on the Galway community and the importance of their ongoing dedication to lifesaving work. Their collective efforts exemplify the spirit of volunteerism and the critical role that the RNLI plays in ensuring maritime safety.
