Kilkenny Teachers Take a Leap for LGBTQ+ Charity
Two teachers from Kilkenny City Vocational School are set to abseil down Dublin’s Smithfield Tower on November 2, 2025, in a daring effort to raise funds for Belong To, an organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth across Ireland. Alisha May and Anna Mahony will join over 30 participants in the Belong To Abseil Challenge 2025, descending 200 feet to draw attention and donations for this crucial cause.
The initiative aims to bolster the resources available for LGBTQ+ young people and their families. Alisha, who admits to feeling anxious on heights, and Anna, who embraces adventure, are both committed to showing solidarity with their students through this fundraising effort. “We’re putting our lives (and dignity) on the line for a very good cause. Sponsor us. Cheer us on. Laugh with us (or at us). Every donation helps LGBTQ+ young people feel safe, supported, and free to shine,” they stated.
Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Ireland
Belong To is a national youth organization that offers vital services, including crisis counseling, family support, and information resources. The organization collaborates with schools to combat bullying through initiatives like the Stand Up Awareness Week, which targets homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying. Additionally, Belong To runs an 18-month LGBTQ+ Quality Programme, fostering inclusion and well-being in educational settings.
As part of their fundraising activities, May and Mahony plan to host a bake sale and a non-uniform Halloween costume day at their school. The teachers emphasize the importance of their actions, not only for fundraising but also for creating a supportive environment for their students. Anna Mahony remarked, “This challenge means so much to us because we want our students to know that their teachers stand beside them.”
Moninne Griffith, CEO of Belong To, expressed gratitude for the teachers’ commitment, highlighting the significant challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth in Ireland. Research shows that these young people experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts compared to their peers. Griffith stated, “It’s a real testament to their commitment to creating a better Ireland to grow up LGBTQ+.”
