Kilkenny’s Rossiter Shoe Repairs Closes After 38 Years of Service
Local business Rossiter Shoe Repairs and Pedorthics officially closed its doors for the last time on Saturday evening, marking the end of an era in Kilkenny City. After serving the community for 38 years, the business will now transition to an online operation to continue serving its loyal customers.
In a heartfelt message to patrons, Michael Rossiter, the owner, expressed his emotions regarding the closure. “To all our loyal customers, the day has finally come! After 38 years in Kilkenny, it’s time to collect my lotto prize. My retirement from cobbling!” he stated. The shop first opened in May 1988 at the old arcade before relocating to its current location on the Butterslip.
The closure signifies a significant transition for Rossiter, who has been a staple in the local community. He plans to focus on personal projects, particularly mentoring his sons. “There’s things I want to do with my sons. I want to give them a little bit of mentoring through little projects that they are going through, so no, Michael Rossiter ain’t gone; he’ll still be around,” he told the Kilkenny People earlier this year. He added, “It’s part two. I’m not going to be a daytime TV fella. There will be a need to get up every day.”
The community has responded warmly to the news, with numerous messages of support flooding in since the announcement. One individual wrote, “Congratulations on your retirement!! You will be missed so, so much,” while another wished him “the very best of luck in your retirement. You’ll be missed in Kilkenny.” A third social media user remarked, “Michael, you were one of the best! You still are one of the best!! Enjoy every day of retirement.”
The legacy of Rossiter Shoe Repairs will undoubtedly be felt in Kilkenny, as the business has contributed significantly to the local economy and community over nearly four decades. As Michael Rossiter embarks on this new chapter, he carries with him the memories and gratitude of many who have benefited from his craftsmanship and dedication.
