Kylemore Abbey Contributes €91.5 Million to Galway-Mayo Economy
Kylemore Abbey in Connemara is a significant economic driver for the Galway-Mayo region, contributing an estimated €91.5 million to the local economy. The findings come from the 2024 Economic and Social Impact Report, published by the Kylemore Trust and conducted by Fitzpatrick Associates. This independent study highlights the Abbey’s vital role in job creation and community support.
The report reveals that Kylemore Abbey supports approximately 1,850 jobs both directly and indirectly, with around 16% of its staff residing in the local area. This marks a significant increase in employment, with a jobs growth rate of 19.3% since the previous report published six years ago.
Visitor Engagement and Heritage Preservation
In 2023, Kylemore Abbey attracted 572,000 visitors from 82 countries, reflecting its status as a premier tourist destination. Originally founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1920, the site remains home to a small community of nuns. The Abbey not only serves as a cultural and historical landmark but also plays an essential role in the preservation of its heritage.
All funds generated through tourism and philanthropy are reinvested into the Abbey, ensuring its maintenance and the continuation of its longstanding traditions. The economic impact of Kylemore Abbey extends beyond mere numbers; it enhances the cultural richness of the region and fosters community engagement.
The findings underline the importance of such heritage sites in contributing to local economies, particularly in areas reliant on tourism. As the Abbey continues to welcome visitors, it remains committed to its mission of preservation and community support, further solidifying its role in the Galway-Mayo area.
