Limerick Women Lead Irish Language News with Nuacht Cúla4

Two women from Limerick are making significant contributions to Irish-language media as the daily news service Nuacht Cúla4 gears up for a new season. The programme, broadcast on TG4, welcomes back editor and newsreader Katelyn Hayes, who hails from Carrigkerry. Katelyn has been instrumental in shaping the direction of Nuacht Cúla4 since its launch, continuing her vital role as both editor and producer.

Katelyn’s journey began in her hometown, where she attended Carrigkerry National School and later Scoil Mhuire agus Íde. She pursued a degree in Mathematics and Irish, followed by a Master’s in Media Studies at the University of Galway. Her dedication to Irish-language broadcasting has earned her respect in the field, and she is known for her compelling storytelling and strong ties to her heritage. Katelyn attributes much of her inspiration to her grandmother, Annie, who has played a pivotal role in her life.

In addition to her editorial responsibilities, Katelyn is passionate about sports, particularly ladies football. Notably, she had the honour of providing commentary from Croke Park last year, showcasing her versatility as a broadcaster. Her influence on young audiences continues to grow, as she strives to help them connect with current events in their native language.

Joining Katelyn this season is another talented Limerick native, Áine Humphreys, from Meanus. A former student of Crecora National School and Laurel Hill Coláiste, Áine holds a degree in Gaeilge and Music from University College Cork (UCC) and earned a Master’s in Education from the University of Galway. In 2024, she received a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship and spent time in the United States teaching Irish at the University of Montana.

Áine’s passion for the Irish language and culture is evident in her work as a harpist and traditional music enthusiast. She is also a dedicated supporter of Limerick GAA, having played camogie both locally and internationally. Her diverse experiences enrich the content of Nuacht Cúla4, helping to engage and inspire a new generation of Irish speakers.

With local talent like Katelyn and Áine at the helm, Nuacht Cúla4 is poised to continue delivering accessible, engaging news. The programme aims to inspire young audiences while fostering a love for the Irish language and culture.

Nuacht Cúla4 returns for its third season, airing on TG4 at 1:30 PM and again at 5:30 PM. Viewers can catch it every week from Tuesday to Friday, ensuring that the future of Irish-language journalism remains bright, with a strong influence from Limerick.
