Limerick Young Athletes Shine at Garda National Youth Awards
Two promising athletes from Limerick received prestigious recognition at the Garda National Youth Awards held on March 2, 2024, at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise. The event celebrated the achievements of 25 young individuals across Ireland who have significantly contributed to their communities.
The awards highlighted the remarkable efforts of local talent, with Cormac Downey from Shanagolden receiving a special achievement award, while Terry Casey from Southill was honored with an individual award. Notably, Chief Superintendent Derek Smart accepted the accolade on behalf of Casey, who could not attend the ceremony.
Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing & Community Engagement, Catharina Gunne, opened the awards with a commendation for all nominees. She emphasized that the dedication and enthusiasm of these young people are vital to the fabric of their communities. “Each winner here today represents the very best of what young people in our communities can achieve. They are all inspirational,” Gunne stated.
Cormac Downey: A Beacon of Resilience
Award recipient Cormac Downey has made notable contributions through his involvement in Munster Wheelchair Hurling. Nominated by David Fitzgerald, Cormac has not only excelled in sports but has also served as an inspiration to others facing challenges. Born with cerebral palsy, he has demonstrated extraordinary resilience and determination.
Since beginning wheelchair hurling at the age of ten, Cormac has raised awareness and funds for the sport, notably completing the Great Limerick Run. His leadership qualities shone as he captained his junior team to victory in the Fitzgerald Cup, inspiring younger players with his tenacity. This year, he earned three All-Ireland Medals in hurling and made his rugby debut for Ireland, preparing for the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League Cup.
Cormac’s journey has garnered admiration from numerous figures in Irish sports, including Limerick hurling manager John Kiely, who frequently highlights his story as a testament to courage and perseverance.
Terry Casey: From Dreams to Reality
Similarly, Terry Casey has made a significant impact in his community through his involvement with the Moyross Youth Diversion Project. Nominated by Andrew O’Byrne, Terry’s journey began with the Moyross Youth Academy Equine Foundation Programme, which introduced local youth to the equine industry.
Terry’s passion for horses led him to pursue a place at the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE), ultimately paving the way for a successful career as a professional jockey. His story serves as an inspiration to many in his community, showcasing what can be achieved through commitment and support.
His journey is a source of immense pride not only for his family but also for the Moyross Youth Academy, which has played a crucial role in his development. Terry’s accomplishments underline the importance of community initiatives in fostering talent and personal growth.
Both Cormac and Terry exemplify the power of resilience and community support, embodying the spirit of the Garda National Youth Awards. Their achievements remind us of the profound impact young people can have on society, encouraging others to pursue their dreams and contribute positively to their communities.
