Manufacturing Day Ireland Highlights Pathways to STEM Careers

Manufacturing Day Ireland, an initiative by Ibec, aims to showcase the diverse opportunities within the manufacturing sector and the vital role it plays in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) landscape. The event is set to emphasize innovation, skills, and career pathways that can lead to fulfilling and future-proof employment.
One notable figure in this narrative is Brian O’Connor, Head of mAbs Operations at Sanofi Waterford. His journey exemplifies the potential for growth and achievement in the manufacturing field, demonstrating that success can come from unexpected beginnings. Brian began his career in 2008 on a three-month contract in packaging, where his initial responsibilities included loading bottles into a hopper for tablet filling. Today, he oversees a significant section of operations that produces life-changing medicines for patients globally.
Brian reflects on his unconventional route to success, stating, “I didn’t follow the traditional route.” With support from Sanofi, he pursued education later in life, completing an accountancy degree, a degree in manufacturing management, and a master’s in lean operations. He emphasizes the critical role of educational support from employers in the manufacturing industry, saying, “Lots of education and learning on the job and off the job” contributed to his advancement.
The manufacturing sector is characterized by its commitment to investing in talent. This investment not only fosters individual career growth but also enhances the industry’s overall capabilities. “What we do and the medicines that we make equates to somebody in the world being helped,” Brian notes, highlighting the significant impact of their work.
For those who believe STEM careers are solely for top-tier science students, Brian offers a different perspective. “You don’t always have to follow the traditional path,” he advises. He encourages individuals to pursue what they enjoy, connect with supportive colleagues, and take advantage of the various alternatives available in the field.
Manufacturing is fast-paced and innovative, offering numerous opportunities for personal and professional development. As Brian O’Connor’s experience illustrates, it is never too late to carve out a niche in STEM.
Manufacturing Day Ireland serves as a platform for aspiring professionals to learn about the many pathways available in this thriving sector. For further information about this initiative and its offerings, interested individuals can visit Ibec’s official website.
