A hairdresser from Castlebar, Mayo, has made headlines after winning a remarkable EuroMillions prize of €255,000. Patrick Monahan officially claimed his winnings from the EuroMillions Ireland Only Raffle promotion, which took place on May 30, 2023. Known locally for his four decades of experience in the salon industry, it is not his hairstyling talents that are capturing attention today, but rather his winning lottery ticket.

The National Lottery confirmed that Monahan purchased the winning ticket at Duffy’s Costcutter on Turlough Road in Castlebar, just minutes before the deadline for the raffle. He had bought two Quick Pick tickets, one intended for himself and the other for a close friend who was waiting in the car. Upon returning to the vehicle, Monahan playfully asked his friend to choose between the two tickets, holding them out in his hands. His friend selected the right-hand ticket, leaving Monahan with the left, which turned out to be the winning one.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” Monahan expressed, still processing the life-changing news. “It’s an incredible amount of money, especially since I thought I’d won €5,000, not an extra €250,000!” His excitement reflects the significant impact this prize will have on his life.

In celebration, Monahan plans to share the moment with the friend who accompanied him that day. “We’ve shared plenty of laughs over the years, and this is definitely one we’ll never forget. I couldn’t celebrate without him!”

As the community buzzes with excitement over Monahan’s win, attention also turns to the upcoming Lotto Jackpot. This Saturday night, the estimated prize is €2 million. Tickets can be purchased in-store, via the National Lottery app, or at lottery.ie, with the cutoff time set for 19:45 local time.

Monahan’s story serves as a reminder of the unexpected joys that life can bring, as well as the thrill of participating in the lottery, which continues to create winners across Ireland.
