A new history book, authored by archaeologist and historian Brian Lacey, delves into the intriguing legacy of one of Donegal’s lesser-known royal families, the Cenéil nEógain. Scheduled for launch on September 26, 2023, the 352-page volume covers a span of four centuries in Donegal history, offering insights into the dynamics of power and conflict in the region.

The Cenéil nEógain dynasty emerged victorious over its rival, the Cenéil Conaill, at the battle of Clóitech in AD 789. Following this significant event, the kingdom, also known as ‘Ailech,’ expanded its influence across present-day Counties Derry and Tyrone, while also reaching into Armagh. The dynasty dominated much of Ulster and at times achieved the higher kingship of Tara, cementing its status in the region.

With the introduction of surnames around the year 1000, the leading families associated with Cenéil nEógain became the Mac Lochlainns and the O’Neills. In contrast, the defeated Cenéil Conaill struggled to maintain its prominence in the face of competition from a newly emerged kingdom, the Síl Lugdach, which originated from western Donegal. By around 1200, the O’Neills and the dominant family of the Síl Lugdach, the O’Donnells, were poised to rule the entirety of Ulster until the English conquest in the early 1600s.

Lacey’s book, titled Cenéil nEógain and the Donegal Kingdoms, AD 800–1200, meticulously outlines these historical developments, shedding light on how the shifting power dynamics shaped the region. This work aims not only to document history but also to celebrate the rich archaeological heritage of Inishowen.

The launch event will take place at the Inishowen Maritime Museum, organized by the Lands of Eogain heritage group. In addition to the book launch, attendees can expect a celebration of Inishowen’s archaeological heritage, featuring the unveiling of a new website, a podcast, and musical entertainment. The gathering promises to be a lively occasion for history enthusiasts and community members alike.

For those interested in acquiring a copy of Cenéil nEógain and the Donegal Kingdoms, AD 800–1200, further details and a purchase link are available at Four Courts Press. This book not only serves as a vital resource for understanding Donegal’s past but also highlights the ongoing relevance of its historical narratives.
