Raphoe is set to come alive this Friday, December 1, 2023, with the official switching on of the town’s Christmas lights. The celebrations kick off at 18:00 with a performance by the acclaimed Finn Valley Men’s Choir, who will deliver stirring renditions of beloved Christmas classics. Alongside them will be popular local musicians Christy Murray and his band of tin whistlers, as well as Aoife and Eugene McGinley, all contributing to the festive atmosphere.

This year, local community groups are invited to participate, allowing them to showcase their clubs and answer questions from attendees. The highlight of the evening will be the arrival of Santa Claus at 19:00, who will lead the countdown to illuminate the Christmas lights, accompanied by the Raphoe Ulster Scots Pipe Band. Children will have the opportunity to visit Santa’s grotto, where they can receive a free photograph and a gift.

The night promises complimentary refreshments, including mulled wine, hot soup, hot chocolate, and fruit juices, making it an enjoyable outing for families. This community event is made possible through sponsorship and contributions from local shops, fundraising efforts, as well as support from Donegal Local Development Company (DLDC), Donegal County Council, and Failte Ireland.

Christmas Market and Weekend Festivities

The festive cheer continues into the weekend, with Volt House hosting a Christmas market on Saturday from 11:00 to 18:00. Attendees can explore various stalls featuring home-baked goods, arts and crafts, Christmas wreaths, and gifts. A special treat for children includes free face painting from 11:00 to 12:00.

For the first time, the community will also witness a parade from Deele College to the Diamond, featuring participation from numerous local groups, clubs, and schools. Entertainment will commence at 14:00 with the talented Johnny Haughey and other local acts performing throughout the afternoon.

The Christmas market will reopen on Sunday at 11:00, showcasing new vendors for a delightful shopping experience. Live entertainment resumes at 14:00, featuring musicians from The Diamond Bar and the skilled Donegal Piper Christy Murray.

This weekend’s events offer a perfect opportunity for families to engage with the community and embrace the festive spirit as Raphoe shines brightly with holiday cheer.
