Residents of Richmond Terrace in Henry Street, Limerick, have made history by becoming the first community to receive the Limerick City Tidy Towns award, previously dedicated exclusively to businesses. This recognition, which covers the months of August and September 2025, celebrates their commitment to maintaining a beautiful communal garden and well-kept house frontages.

Maura O’Neill, a representative of Limerick City Tidy Towns, expressed her enthusiasm about this significant shift in the award’s history. “What’s rare is beautiful, and this can certainly be said of our latest bi-monthly winner which has gone to residential rather than business premises for a change,” O’Neill stated. She highlighted the exceptional beauty of Richmond Terrace, calling it “a little gated oasis in the heart of the city,” adorned with impressive landscaping and floral displays.

Richmond Terrace, originally built as a row of seven Georgian townhouses, has a rich history dating back to March 1, 1842. The original lease was established between Edmond Henry, Earl of Limerick, and John Bowerman for all seven houses. Over the decades, it has served as a residence for many prominent families in Limerick. The community, now predominantly made up of retired residents, was refurbished in the 1990s, resulting in the removal of one house. Today, the site is owned by the John Nash Charity and consists of six well-preserved houses that continue to offer comfortable living in the city centre nearly 182 years later.

The award to Richmond Terrace marks the fourth win for the Tidy Towns initiative in 2025. The decision to honour a residential community reflects a growing appreciation for the importance of communal spaces in urban environments. By recognizing the efforts of residents, the Limerick City Tidy Towns committee hopes to inspire other communities to take pride in their surroundings.

The residents of Richmond Terrace exemplify how dedicated maintenance and community spirit can create an inviting atmosphere that enhances the city’s overall appeal. The award not only acknowledges their hard work but also serves as a reminder of the value of community engagement in urban beautification efforts.
