Saint Vincent de Paul Anticipates Record Demand This Christmas
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SVP) is preparing for an unprecedented demand for assistance this holiday season, anticipating requests for help will exceed 250,000 by the end of the year. Broadcasters Marty Whelan and Mary Kennedy launched the charity’s Annual Appeal last week, highlighting the urgent need for public support to assist families facing financial pressures.
This year’s appeal, themed “The Wonder of Christmas,” underscores the challenges many families face in providing basic needs. Individuals are increasingly reaching out to SVP, questioning how they will afford essentials like food, heating, and gifts during the festive season. According to Teresa Ryan, National President of SVP, requests for help have risen by 7% compared to October 2022, signaling a growing crisis for vulnerable households.
The rising cost of living continues to strain many households, particularly those led by single parents, low-income workers, individuals with disabilities, and families living in unstable housing situations. Despite budget measures aimed at alleviating financial strain, many still find it difficult to make ends meet.
Every donation made to the SVP helps ensure a swift local response to those in need. The charity provides vital services in Galway, including food hampers, fuel assistance, and educational support. Volunteers conduct home visitations to offer confidential and practical help, alongside advocacy and advice for families struggling with hardship.
Individuals interested in contributing to the appeal can donate online at svp.ie, by calling 0818 176 176, or by mailing contributions to Ozanam House, St Augustine Street, Galway. Donations are also accepted through blue envelopes available in local newspapers and churches.
The Annual Appeal launch featured a gathering of notable figures, including Marty Whelan, Maureen Mitchell (SVP Regional President West), Teresa Ryan, and Mary Kennedy. Their commitment to raising awareness for this cause reflects the growing urgency to support families in need as the festive season approaches.
