The community of Moy is mourning the loss of Benny Martin, a respected funeral director, who passed away on October 24, 2023. His death, which occurred at Craigavon Area Hospital, was announced with tributes pouring in from those who knew him. Benny was buried today at St John’s Cemetery, following a funeral Mass held at St Peter’s Church in nearby Collegeland.
Martin, who was a lifelong resident of Charlemont Road, was the face of the family-run business, Benedict J. Martin & Son, established by his late father in 1950. The firm has been a cornerstone of the local community for decades, providing support and care during difficult times.
A dedicated family man, Benny Martin is remembered as a devoted husband to Maura and a loving father to Benedict and Maria. He was also a proud father-in-law to Stephen and a cherished grandfather to Dara and Jude. His death notice highlighted his deep familial roots, noting that he was the beloved son of the late Benny and Anna Martin and brother to Mary (Ashford), Francis, Sean, and the late Eugene.
Friends and community members have shared heartfelt tributes online, with one mourner stating, “Heartbroken to hear the sad news of a great gentleman who will be sadly missed. R.I.P. Benny — you were one in a million. Condolences to the family at this sad time.” Others echoed similar sentiments, describing him as “a true gentleman” and “a wonderful character.”
The impact of Benny Martin extended beyond his work in funeral services. He was also involved in local sports, having played for and supported the Collegeland O’Rahillys Gaelic Football Club. The club expressed their condolences, stating: “Benny, former player and long-time supporter, participated in our Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser in 2014. Benny’s father was also Chairman in 1961, overseeing our Senior Championship win.”
The loss of Benny Martin leaves a significant void in the community, where he was known not only for his professional contributions but also for his character and kindness. His legacy will surely be felt for years to come, as the community reflects on the life of a true gentleman who dedicated himself to serving others.
