Tributes Honor Award-Winning Photographer Kieran Clancy
A wave of tributes has emerged following the death of Kieran Clancy, a highly esteemed Irish press photographer, who passed away on October 6, 2023, after a prolonged battle with illness. Clancy, originally from Mayorstone near Limerick, was surrounded by family at a nursing home in County Clare when he died.
Clancy enjoyed a distinguished career in photography, particularly noted for his work with the Cork Examiner and later the Irish Examiner. Over two decades, he covered a wide array of news, sports, and entertainment stories across the Mid West of Ireland. His contributions to the field of photography earned him recognition as one of Ireland’s premier press photographers.
Legacy and Contributions
Throughout his career, Clancy was recognized not only for his talent but also for his dedication to the profession. He served as president of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland (IPPA) and received an honorary membership in 2021 for his exceptional contributions to the association and the industry.
Colleagues have shared their admiration for his work ethic and keen eye for detail. “He had a great eye for a photograph and the story being told in the image,” said Noel Gavin, a former colleague. Gavin reminisced about Clancy’s competitive spirit, noting that he had an uncanny ability to capture the perfect shot with quiet determination.
Another well-respected photographer, Owen South, expressed his sorrow, stating, “Kieran was a lovely man and a great photographer. His meticulous approach to every job was admirable.”
A Family Tradition in Photography
Kieran Clancy’s passion for photography ran in the family. His father, Seán Clancy, was a notable photojournalist for the Irish Independent in Limerick, while his late brother, Kevin Clancy, was recognized as a pioneer in the transition from film to digital photography.
Freelance photographer Brendan Gleeson reflected on Clancy’s influence, calling him “an inspirational photographer” and a “pure gentleman.” He highlighted Clancy’s enthusiasm, stating, “He had a great eye and was so enthusiastic about the job.”
Clancy’s career spanned a variety of subjects, capturing images of everyone from presidents to everyday people. After retiring from press photography in 2016, he continued to work in wedding photography and commercial projects.
One memorable incident involved former US President Gerald Ford, when Clancy attempted to capture a unique angle while photographing Ford at Shannon Airport. In his pursuit, Clancy sat on a glass coffee table, which cracked loudly, startling the president and his security detail. This anecdote highlights Clancy’s adventurous spirit and dedication to his craft.
Funeral arrangements for Kieran Clancy will be announced in the coming days as friends, family, and colleagues continue to remember his remarkable contributions to photography and the impact he had on those around him.
