Tributes Pour In for Alan Bird, Beloved Bohemian FC Editor
The football community in Dublin is mourning the loss of Alan Bird, the long-serving programme editor for Bohemian FC, who passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023, at the Mater Hospital. Surrounded by family, Bird’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and fans alike, who describe him as a “dear friend taken far, far too soon.”
Alan Bird, who had been with Bohemian FC since 2013, was known for his cheerful disposition and unwavering dedication to the club. His contributions extended beyond the matchday programme, where he played a pivotal role in elevating its quality. In a statement on the club’s website, Bohemian FC expressed their profound sadness, stating, “Everyone at Bohemian FC is devastated to learn of the sad passing of Alan Bird, our long-serving matchday programme editor.”
Bird’s journey with the club began in the 1998/99 season when he contributed a regular page titled “Bird’s Eye View.” His talent soon became evident as he showcased his design skills, leading to a more polished and professional programme. By 2004, he had established himself as the club’s go-to person for creating various promotional materials, including adverts and flyers.
Stephen Burke, Bird’s predecessor as programme editor, reflected on his legacy, stating, “Alan would never refuse a request for help, indeed he would surprise you afresh with something bright and cheerful that would catch the eye.” Burke further recalled a significant health scare Bird faced in 2011, when he underwent a major heart operation. “If anything, he now had even more energy, ideas and enthusiasm for Bohs and the programme in particular,” he noted.
Bird’s commitment to his role remained steadfast, even as he battled illness in recent years. He continued to work on the matchday programme, producing some of his best work this season, including a special issue honoring Billy Young. Remarkably, Bird managed to compile his final programme, his 248th as editor, while in his hospital bed, a testament to his dedication and character.
His contributions were recognized when Bohemian FC won the 2023 Fergus Reid Award for Premier Division Programme of the Year, an accolade that Bird had long deserved. The club emphasized that Bird’s passion for football and commitment to Bohemian FC would be remembered fondly.
Alan Bird is survived by his wife, Sandra, parents Bernard and Ann, and siblings Conor and Elaine. A funeral service will be held at St. Canice’s Church in Finglas Village on October 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., followed by cremation at Glasnevin Crematorium. The community is invited to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this cherished individual.
Bird’s impact on the club and the lives he touched will not be forgotten, as tributes continue to pour in from those who knew him. His legacy is one of passion, creativity, and a profound love for the game.
