James O’Donnell, known affectionately as Jim Chonaill, passed away on December 2, 2023, at his home in Ranafast, Annagry. A significant figure in the fight against cancer in Ireland, he dedicated over 20 years to advocating for improved cancer services in the north west region through his work with Donegal Action for Cancer Care.

Legacy of Advocacy and Dedication

Originally from Knockastolar, Bunbeg, Mr. O’Donnell became the Public Relations Officer for Donegal Action for Cancer Care in 2005. This role marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that saw him emerge as a passionate advocate for cancer patients, tirelessly working to enhance healthcare services available to them.

Local politician, Pat Gallagher, paid tribute to O’Donnell, highlighting his “unwavering dedication” to the cause. Gallagher noted that O’Donnell later took on the role of Chairman of Co-operating for Cancer Care NorthWest. In this capacity, he was instrumental in championing vital improvements to cancer services in the area.

One of his significant achievements was advocating for a permanent breast surgeon in Letterkenny. O’Donnell also led efforts to secure cross-border radiotherapy services at Altnagelvin, an initiative that gained momentum with substantial investment from the Irish Government.

Gallagher emphasized O’Donnell’s commitment, stating, “He continued throughout his life to advocate tirelessly for the development and expansion of cancer services.” His advocacy efforts frequently took him to Dublin and Stormont, where he engaged with ministers and decision-makers to ensure the needs of cancer patients were prioritized.

Community Impact and Personal Tributes

Beyond his professional achievements, O’Donnell was a beloved figure within his community. Gallagher reflected on their long-standing relationship, saying, “He canvassed with me across Donegal and Connaught/Ulster.” This personal connection underscores the profound impact O’Donnell had not only as an advocate but also as a friend and community member.

O’Donnell’s passing is a significant loss for many. He is survived by his wife, Ita, and his children, Celine, Marguerita (married to Michael), and Connell, along with his brother, Connie. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren also mourn the loss of a cherished family member.

In accordance with his wishes, O’Donnell’s remains will repose at his home in Ranafast from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM on December 3 and from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on December 4. A rosary will be recited nightly at 8:00 PM, with the family requesting privacy following these sessions.

The Funeral Mass will take place on December 5 at 11:00 AM in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church in Annagry, with burial following in the new graveyard. The Mass will be available for live viewing on Kieran Roarty Funeral Director’s Facebook page and the Annagry Parish webcam. The family has requested that flowers be omitted, suggesting donations to Donegal Hospice instead.

O’Donnell’s legacy of service and his unwavering dedication to improving cancer care will not be forgotten. His impact on the lives of many in the community remains a testament to his life’s work.
