University of Galway Students Achieve Awards for Sustainability and Inclusion

Two innovative projects led by students at the University of Galway have earned prestigious awards for their contributions to sustainability and diversity. The recognition came at the ENLIGHT Teaching and Learning Conference, where student initiatives were acknowledged for their significant impact and alignment with the ENLIGHT European University Alliance’s core values.
The ENLIGHT alliance, which includes 10 research-intensive universities formed in 2020, aims to transform how global challenges are addressed. It seeks to empower students, educators, and researchers to tackle complex sustainability issues collaboratively.
Innovative Solutions for Sustainability
In the Sustainability category, Adam Mullins from the University of Galway Students’ Union received first place for the SPÉIR – SU Pantry project. This initiative focuses on collecting surplus food that is damaged, nearing expiration, or otherwise unsellable. These food items are sourced through FoodCloud and redistributed among students rather than being wasted. This project not only addresses food waste but also supports students facing food insecurity.
Mullins’s project exemplifies how student-led initiatives can create meaningful change in their communities while promoting sustainability.
Championing Diversity and Inclusion
The Active* Champions project also garnered top honors, winning first place in the Diversity and Inclusion category. The initiative employs a peer-education model to tackle pressing issues related to inclusion and awareness on campus. Judges praised its impact, stating that “we can never have enough initiatives that highlight these issues.”
The award was accepted by María José Hun, a postgraduate student representing the Active* Champions network. This group comprises student peer educators focused on ending sexual violence and harassment, promoting consent, and enhancing sexual health and well-being. The initiative is supported by the Office of the Vice President for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the university.
The jury, composed of sustainability and inclusion professionals from all ENLIGHT partner institutions, underscored the importance of these awards in fostering a culture of innovation and responsibility among students. The initiative has received backing from the Government and the European Commission, reflecting its broader significance.
The recognition of these projects highlights the vital role that student initiatives play in addressing societal challenges. The University of Galway continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering an environment where students can engage in meaningful, impactful work that benefits both the university community and society at large.
