Veterans Charity Aims to Revitalize Historic Limerick Building

The veterans charity Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann (ONE) has initiated its annual fundraising campaign to support the expansion of veteran accommodation in Limerick. The Fuchsia Appeal aims to raise over €0.5 million to implement the Veteran Home Expansion Plan (VHEP), which will establish a six-bedroom home with en-suite facilities in Limerick, alongside operational funding. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that will nearly double the charity’s accommodation capacity over the next seven years.
Since the establishment of its first home in 1994, ONE has provided emergency housing to more than 1,100 homeless veterans across Ireland. The VHEP will officially kick off with a ceremony scheduled for late October 2024 at the future site of Brú Uí Choileáin in Cork City. Each of these homes, including Brú an tSairséalaigh in Limerick, will create a secure environment for Defence Forces veterans, offering essential mental health and support services.
Revitalizing a Historic Building
Brú an tSairséalaigh, located on Lord Edward Street in Limerick, is named in honor of Patrick Sarsfield, a notable commander in the Jacobite Army during the Williamite War from 1689 to 1691. The building, constructed in 1925 as the Commanding Officer’s House, is currently vacant and will be repurposed to serve the needs of veterans. The facility is strategically positioned adjacent to Sarsfield Barracks, enhancing its accessibility for those who have served.
ONE is collaborating closely with the Limerick City and County Council, the Housing Agency, the Department of Defence, and the Defence Forces to ensure the project’s success. The design phase is actively underway, with plans for the home to be ready for occupation by 2026.
Impact on the Veteran Community
Cormac Kirwan, chief executive officer of the Organisation of National Ex-Service Personnel, emphasized the significance of this initiative. He stated, “The new facilities will directly enable ONE to provide homeless veterans with a safe, secure and supportive space, warm meals, camaraderie, care and hope, for as long as it is needed.” This sentiment underscores the charity’s commitment to improving the lives of those who have served their country.
As the Fuchsia Appeal progresses, the charity aims to engage communities across Ireland to support this vital cause. By enhancing accommodation options, the initiative seeks not only to provide shelter but also to foster a sense of belonging and community among veterans.
ONE’s efforts reflect a growing recognition of the challenges faced by veterans and the importance of providing comprehensive support systems. The successful execution of the VHEP will represent a significant advancement in the ongoing mission to ensure that no veteran is left without a place to call home.
