A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of Jack McIlroy, a 25-year-old soccer official, in Kingscourt, County Cavan, on August 27, 2023. Mr. McIlroy, a resident of Cluain Beag, Nobber, County Meath, was involved in an incident at Paramount Doors Ireland, which ultimately led to his passing at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Mr. McIlroy was well-regarded in the local soccer community, particularly within the Leinster league. He had recently taken on the role of Secretary at the Electro Celtic Soccer Club, where he was celebrated for his commitment and professionalism. The club expressed deep sorrow in a statement, noting his passion for the sport and his dedication to the club’s activities.

The tribute from Electro Celtic emphasized, “Jack was only 25 years old and took on the role of Secretary at his club last year due to his passion for soccer and brought a level of professionalism to the role in his time as club secretary.” The statement extended condolences to his parents, Alan and Deirdre, and his extended family and friends during this difficult time.

Another local club, Parkceltic from Summerhill, also shared their condolences, stating, “Our deepest condolences to Electro Celtic, the teammates, family, and friends of Jack during this heart-breaking time. May he rest in peace.”

Friends and community members described Mr. McIlroy as a kind and attentive individual. One friend remarked, “Such a lovely young man, I got to know Jack on the sidelines watching Electro play. Many kids at the game loved Jack, telling him all their stories and, of course, he listened to them all.” The friend expressed heartfelt sympathy for Jack’s family and stated, “We are all heartbroken.”

In a show of respect, all soccer clubs in the area have been asked to observe a minute’s applause during fixtures this week in memory of Mr. McIlroy.

Emergency services, along with An Garda Síochána, responded to the scene shortly before midday on August 27. According to a Garda spokesperson, “Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a workplace accident at a premises in Kingscourt, Co Cavan, on Wednesday 27th August at approximately 11:50 am. A man, aged in his 20s, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Co Louth, where he has since been pronounced deceased.”

In the coming days, Jack McIlroy will be laid in repose at his family home on Saturday, with visiting hours from 14:00 to 20:00. His funeral mass is scheduled for Sunday at 11:15 am at St. John the Baptist’s Church, followed by burial at the local cemetery.
