Bishop Leahy Celebrates Mass with Pope Leo, Honors Newman
Bishop Brendan Leahy of Limerick recently concelebrated a Mass with Pope Leo in Rome, marking a significant moment in the Catholic Church as the Pope declared St John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church. This title is bestowed upon saints recognized for their substantial contributions to theology or doctrine through their extensive research, study, or writings.
The connection between Limerick and St John Henry Newman is noteworthy, as he visited the city multiple times during the 1850s. Reflecting on the Pope’s declaration, Bishop Leahy remarked, “John Henry Newman was a great teacher. We in Limerick can feel a special link with him because he spent some time in Limerick, writing and preaching.”
Bishop Leahy was accompanied by approximately 30 educators on a pilgrimage to Rome, organized by the Limerick Diocese during the Halloween break. A highlight of the trip was a private audience with Pope Leo, who addressed the educators on the importance of fostering four essential qualities in education: interiority, unity, love, and joy.
During this audience, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to teachers for their dedication to shaping young minds, stating that they embody the Church’s mission through their commitment to education. He emphasized the vital role educators play in the development of future generations.
Bishop Leahy underscored the significance of Newman’s teachings, noting, “His works and example are an inspiration to teachers. We think of his famous expression ‘heart speaks to heart.’” This sentiment resonates deeply within the educational community in Limerick, where Newman’s legacy continues to inspire both educators and students alike.
The pilgrimage not only strengthened the bonds between the educators and their faith but also reinforced the enduring influence of St John Henry Newman on modern education.
