Councillor Pushes for Temporary Rail Platforms Ahead of Ryder Cup 2027
Fianna Fáil councillor Fergus Kilcoyne has formally requested an update on the development of temporary rail platforms to support passenger travel between Foynes and Limerick ahead of the highly anticipated Ryder Cup in 2027. During the recent meeting of the Metropolitan District in November, Kilcoyne proposed that the Limerick City and County Council reach out to the National Transport Authority (NTA), Irish Rail, and the Department of Transport for a progress report on the construction of these platforms.
Kilcoyne’s call for action follows a motion passed at an area meeting in October 2024, which aimed to expedite preparations for the golf tournament. He expressed concern that it has been thirteen months since the motion’s approval without a subsequent update, emphasizing the urgency as the event approaches in just 22 months.
During the council meeting, Kilcoyne stated, “I have heard nothing and it’s only 22 months away from the Ryder Cup. I think it is imperative that we get an update.” He highlighted the necessity of establishing temporary platforms at key population centres, including Adare, Patrickswell, Rosbrien, and Dooradoyle, to ensure smooth access for visitors.
In his remarks, Kilcoyne noted that a temporary platform in Patrickswell would be particularly beneficial, as it is located adjacent to land recently purchased by the council for park-and-ride facilities related to the golf competition. He also mentioned the strategic importance of a platform in Rosbrien, which is near the Crescent Shopping Centre, providing an opportunity for attendees to visit the city after the event.
Kilcoyne underscored the significance of the Ryder Cup for Limerick, stating, “This is a stepping stone onto bigger things for Limerick. The Ryder Cup is the biggest event coming, and we need to capitalise on it.” His proactive approach reflects a broader vision to enhance Limerick’s infrastructure in light of the upcoming international sporting event.
As preparations continue, the call for updates on the temporary rail platforms highlights the importance of coordinated efforts among local authorities, transport agencies, and stakeholders to ensure that Limerick is well-equipped to host visitors from around the world. The Ryder Cup presents a unique opportunity for the region, and timely planning is essential for its success.
