Family Retains Dublin Accommodation After Controversial Transfer Reversal

A family of five seeking international protection in Ireland has successfully avoided a transfer from Dublin to County Mayo, following a significant backlash against the decision. The family, originally from Nigeria and now granted full legal status, was informed by the Department of Justice’s asylum accommodation services that they would be moved due to Dublin’s ongoing housing crisis.
The family has been residing in International Protection Accommodation Service (Ipas) accommodation located in Dublin 8. As reported by various sources, including The Journal, over 7,000 people with legal status have transitioned from Ipas accommodation into long-term housing. Unfortunately, this family remains unable to leave Ipas due to the scarcity of available rental properties in the capital.
The parents, who work as carers in the healthcare sector, were initially notified of their impending move to an accommodation centre in Co Mayo. This decision prompted strong objections from both the family and local volunteer organization, Inchicore for All, which advocated for the family to remain in Dublin until they could secure a rental home.
Community Support and Reversal of Decision
A spokesperson for Inchicore for All expressed relief upon learning that the family’s transfer had been reversed, particularly with the new school year approaching for their children. The spokesperson stated, “We are very happy that this much-loved, hardworking family, who contribute a lot to our community, are being allowed to stay here a while longer.”
The spokesperson further criticized the initial transfer plan, labeling it as “nonsensical.” They emphasized the challenges of uprooting the family from their jobs, schools, and support networks to relocate them hundreds of kilometres away, especially when they hold legal status in the country.
In addition to the emotional toll such decisions can impose on families, the spokesperson highlighted the need for a coordinated approach from government and local authorities to address homelessness effectively. They argued that haphazard measures do not provide lasting solutions and only exacerbate the difficulties faced by families.
Government’s Position and Future Solutions
While the Department of Justice typically refrains from commenting on individual cases, it acknowledged the significant challenges faced by individuals attempting to transition from Ipas accommodation. The department noted the ongoing pressure on housing availability, which complicates such moves.
To facilitate transitions from Ipas accommodation to community housing, the department collaborates with various charities, including DePaul Ireland and the Peter McVerry Trust, alongside local authorities.
As the family continues to reside in Dublin, the situation underscores the critical need for sustainable housing solutions in Ireland, particularly as the country grapples with a significant housing crisis. The ongoing support from community organizations and advocates plays an essential role in navigating these complex issues.
This incident highlights not only the immediate challenges faced by families in need of stable housing but also the broader implications for policy and service delivery in the context of Ireland’s housing landscape.
