Former Donegal County Manager Michael McLoone Passes Away
Former Donegal County Manager Michael McLoone has passed away at the age of 73. Mr. McLoone served as County Manager from 1994 to 2010, during which he implemented several innovative initiatives that significantly impacted the community.
Contributions to Donegal
Throughout his tenure, McLoone oversaw the establishment of Public Services Centres in key locations including Carndonagh, Donegal Town, Dungloe, Letterkenny, and Milford. His leadership was pivotal during challenging times, particularly when he chaired the task force following the closure of Fruit of the Loom’s factories in Donegal.
In addition to his role with the County Council, McLoone was appointed as Chair of the board of Letterkenny Regional Technical College, where he played a crucial role in its redesignation as Letterkenny Institute of Technology in 1997. His contributions extended beyond local governance; he previously served as CEO of Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and was later appointed to the Board of the Health Service Executive (HSE) by then-Health Minister Michael Martin.
A Legacy Beyond Politics
A native of Ballyshannon, McLoone was also known for his athletic achievements as a Gaelic footballer. He played for Aodh Rua and was recognized as part of the Donegal team of the Millennium at wing forward. His prowess extended to representing Ulster in the Railway Cup.
McLoone is survived by his wife Imelda and their four children: Michael, David, Philip, and Caroline. A funeral service will be held in Ballyshannon on Wednesday, where the community will pay their respects to a leader who left a lasting mark on the region.
