French MEP Rima Hassan Honored by Controversial Belgian University

French Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan has expressed her gratitude following a controversial decision by students at the Brussels Free University (ULB) to name their graduating law class in her honor. This recognition comes after Hassan’s high-profile detention by Israeli authorities in June 2023 when she attempted to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza as part of the ‘Freedom Flotilla’.
Hassan, who was born in a Palestinian refugee camp and raised in France, has drawn attention for her outspoken views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The naming of the law class after her has sparked protests in both Belgium and France, reflecting the divisive nature of her political stance. Following her arrest while attempting to aid Gaza, Hassan returned to France to a large demonstration in her support.
In response to the students’ decision, nearly 1,300 signatories submitted a letter to the university’s administration opposing the move. This prompted the law faculty to organize a second vote at the end of August, likely hoping for a different outcome. However, the students reaffirmed their choice in the revote, demonstrating their commitment to their principles.
Public figures, including former French minister Bernard Kouchner, have voiced their disapproval in an open letter published in the Belgian outlet La Libre, labeling the students’ decision as “calamitous.” The ULB Student Union, however, defended the students, stating in a social media post, “Politicians will not dictate students’ decisions.” They emphasized that the choice was a democratic process reflecting the students’ dedication to free inquiry and solidarity.
“I am honoured to sponsor this class,” Hassan said in a statement to Euronews. She expressed her appreciation for those who supported the students against media and political scrutiny, referring to them as having faced “slander” and being treated “like children.”
As the political situation evolves, approximately 50 ships are currently en route to Gaza under the initiative known as the “Global Sumud Flotilla.” This mission aims to establish a humanitarian corridor by sea to assist the Palestinian people. Hassan had intended to participate in this voyage but has committed to visiting Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan on behalf of the European Parliament during the same period.
On Sunday, twenty ships carrying over 300 crew members, including prominent figures such as Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham, departed from Barcelona. However, they were forced to return to port the following day due to adverse weather conditions. Additional vessels are expected to join this humanitarian fleet from Italy and Tunisia in the coming days.
The unfolding events highlight the ongoing complexities surrounding humanitarian efforts in the region and the varied responses to political activism. Hassan’s situation serves as a focal point for discussions on freedom of speech, political expression, and the challenges faced by those advocating for change in conflict zones.
