Heather Humphreys, a candidate in the upcoming presidential election, recently visited Belfast as part of her campaign efforts. During her trip on Monday, she toured various locations, including Ulster University and St Dominic’s School on the Falls Road, which has notable alumni such as former Irish President Mary McAleese.

On Wednesday, her campaign released a video highlighting her Belfast visit. In the original footage, however, a clip of the Bundestag in Berlin mistakenly replaced images of Belfast City Hall. This error was promptly addressed after the Irish Examiner inquired about the footage. A corrected version of the video was subsequently uploaded, featuring the appropriate locations.

A spokesperson for Humphreys explained, “A mistake was made in production and has been rectified. Where issues are brought to our attention, we seek to address them quickly.”

Humphreys, who hails from a Protestant background in the border county of Monaghan, expressed her desire to unify the nation. She emphasized her commitment to building connections and fostering goodwill, aiming to follow in Mary McAleese‘s footsteps by “reaching out the hand of friendship.”

Despite residents in Northern Ireland not having a vote in the presidential election, Humphreys underscored the significance of her visit, stating, “It’s important that I come here, and it’s important that I am in this school where Mary McAleese, the last Ulster woman who was president of Ireland, and in fact the first Ulster woman who was president of Ireland, attended.”

During a second presidential debate held the previous Sunday, Humphreys reiterated her dedication to fostering unity in the region. “I’ve been to the North many, many times; I don’t just go on day trips,” she remarked, highlighting her extensive engagement with Northern Irish communities.

As the presidential election approaches, Humphreys continues to seek support and promote her vision for an inclusive Ireland, reinforcing her commitment to building bridges across divides.
