Irish Wheelchair Association Reports €1,400 Loss for Disabled Post-Budget 2026

The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) has announced that people with disabilities are now facing a financial shortfall of approximately €1,400 following Budget 2026. The organization is calling on the Government of Ireland to implement an emergency winter payment to assist this vulnerable group. The IWA expressed “deep disappointment” that this budget did not deliver a permanent Cost of Disability Payment, which is intended to address the additional living expenses incurred by individuals with disabilities.

The Government has indicated that this permanent payment is scheduled for introduction in 2027. However, the IWA’s analysis reveals that without immediate targeted support, many disabled individuals will encounter heightened struggles during the winter months. The organization warns that thousands could experience increased hardship, social isolation, and difficult choices between essential needs such as heating and food.

Joan Carthy, the IWA’s national advocacy manager, criticized the Government for not recognizing the urgent need for a permanent payment. Carthy stated, “An emergency, one-off winter payment would provide essential relief.” She emphasized that Budget 2026 should have marked a significant improvement in support for people with disabilities, but instead, it appears to have regressed.

The IWA’s findings indicate that the removal of crucial one-off supports, such as the Disability Support Grant and the Living Alone Allowance, has contributed to this financial decline. Carthy pointed out that many members of the IWA are now “being forced to choose between eating and heating,” highlighting the dire circumstances faced by those who rely on these supports.

As discussions around Budget 2026 continue, the IWA remains steadfast in its call for immediate action to alleviate the financial burden on the disabled community. The situation underscores the need for ongoing advocacy and support to ensure that individuals with disabilities are not left behind in future government budgets.
