John Bolton Indicted on Criminal Charges for Handling Classified Material
Former national security adviser John Bolton has been indicted on multiple criminal charges related to the unauthorized handling of classified documents. The indictment, filed on August 31, 2023, in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, alleges that Bolton unlawfully retained top-secret materials and shared sensitive information with family members. This case marks the third indictment against an adversary of former President Donald Trump in just one month.
The 18-count indictment outlines serious allegations, including that Bolton shared over 1,000 pages of government-related information with two relatives during his time in office. Notably, this material included diary-style notes that contained classified content. Prosecutors claim that Bolton’s email account was hacked by individuals believed to be associated with the Iranian regime, potentially exposing sensitive information.
In a statement released shortly after the indictment, Bolton expressed his defiance, characterizing the charges as part of an ongoing campaign by Trump to intimidate his opponents. He stated, “Now, I have become the latest target in weaponising the Justice Department to charge those he deems to be his enemies with charges that were declined before or distort the facts.”
The investigation into Bolton’s activities had reportedly started prior to Trump’s second term beginning in January 2023. According to prosecutors, Bolton had informed the FBI in 2021 about the hacking of his emails but failed to disclose that he had shared classified information, which may have fallen into the hands of the hackers.
In contrast to previous cases against figures like former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, this indictment comes from seasoned national security prosecutors rather than a hastily appointed U.S. attorney. This distinction could suggest a more rigorous examination of the evidence and the legal basis for the charges.
As the legal proceedings unfold, there are growing concerns regarding the Justice Department’s selective focus on political adversaries while appearing to spare Trump’s allies. This scrutiny will likely play a significant role in the public perception of the case, as both supporters and critics of Bolton and Trump weigh in.
Bolton, who served as national security adviser for over a year before being dismissed in 2019, has been an outspoken critic of Trump. His criticisms culminated in the publication of a book that offered a scathing assessment of the former president’s policies and leadership style. As the legal battle begins, all eyes will be on Bolton and the implications of this high-profile indictment within the broader context of U.S. politics.
