Kaja Kallas Defends EU Unity Amid Trump’s Criticism at Doha Forum
In a recent interview with Euronews at the Doha Forum in Qatar, Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, addressed criticisms aimed at the European Union by former US President Donald Trump. Kallas emphasized the importance of unity among Western allies in confronting global challenges, asserting that the United States remains Europe’s most significant ally despite differing views.
Focus on Collaboration and Global Challenges
Kallas encouraged both continents to prioritize collaboration, stating, “Let’s focus on the things that we can do together.” She acknowledged the ongoing tensions and challenges posed by nations such as China, Russia, and Iran, which threaten global stability. The foreign policy chief underscored the need for a united front against “economic coercive practices” from China and the malign influences from other states.
Her remarks came shortly after the release of a new National Security Strategy by the United States, which described Europe as facing a potential decline. The strategy warned of “civilisational erasure” due to migration issues and suggested cultivating resistance to Europe’s current trajectory. Kallas, however, maintained that the US and EU should remain focused on shared security interests.
Strengthening Ties with Qatar and Beyond
During the interview, Kallas also highlighted the EU’s evolving relationship with Qatar, noting the country’s increasing role in international mediation efforts. She pointed to Qatar’s involvement in conflicts in Sudan and Gaza, as well as efforts to support Ukrainian children affected by the ongoing war with Russia.
“We see that we have a lot of things where we can work together,” Kallas stated, emphasizing not only peace and security but also opportunities for collaboration in trade, economic relations, innovation, and technology.
As discussions continue between US officials and their Ukrainian counterparts to bring an end to the war, Kallas’s comments reflect a commitment to maintaining strong transatlantic ties and addressing the pressing challenges facing both Europe and the broader international community.
