Limerick Opera Site Set for 22 New Apartments in Ambitious Redevelopment

A planning application has been submitted for the redevelopment of a vacant site in the heart of Limerick City, proposing the construction of a seven-storey apartment block that will include 22 new residential units. The project, led by architecture firm Healy Partners in collaboration with developers HKD Limited, aims to transform a brownfield site on Michael Street into a vibrant addition to the city.
The proposed building will feature 16 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom apartments, alongside a communal area for residents and commercial space on the ground floor. This initiative is part of a broader effort to revitalize the area, which has seen a notable increase in development interest recently.
Broader Urban Development Initiatives
This announcement follows the Land Development Agency (LDA) confirming plans for 285 new apartments along the Dock Road. This development will include a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments at the Limerick Gasworks Site, pending planning approval. The project aims to create a public plaza, daycare facilities, play areas, green spaces, and retail units, catering to the growing demand for housing in the city.
The proposed housing will comprise 142 one-bedroom, 127 two-bedroom, and 16 three-bedroom units spread across three blocks ranging from one to eight storeys. This extensive development is a clear indication of Limerick’s commitment to addressing housing needs and enhancing urban life.
Significant Developments at Opera Square
In addition to the apartment projects, a new 14-storey office building is set to commence at the Opera Square site, which will serve as a hub for the Revenue Commissioners. At a recent meeting of the Limerick City and County Council, members approved a resolution to sell land at the Opera Square site to the Office of Public Works, facilitating the construction of this significant new workplace that will accommodate nearly 1,000 employees.
Over the past few years, the development of the Opera site by Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC has received support from local officials, demonstrating a collaborative effort to modernize the city and provide essential infrastructure for its residents and workforce.
With these ambitious projects in the pipeline, Limerick is poised to enhance its urban landscape significantly, creating more housing options and employment opportunities in the region.
