Residents of Limerick City are set to voice their concerns about the proposed installation of multiple wind farms in the area through a protest scheduled for Saturday, November 1. Organized by a coalition called the Limerick Communities Alliance, the demonstration aims to highlight what the group describes as “communities under siege” due to the erection of over 30 wind turbines across rural County Limerick.

The protest will feature a “massive slow drive” through the city, commencing at the Greyhound Track on Dock Road and proceeding through the city centre. Participants are encouraged to join the convoy or show their support from the roadside. Organizers have warned motorists to expect delays during the event.

The Limerick Communities Alliance comprises various local action groups from regions including Coolcappa, Bruff, Dromin, Athlacca, Ballinlee, Bruree, and Charleville. In their statement, the alliance expressed alarm over the scale of the proposed wind farms, stating that the installation of large-scale turbines in such densely populated rural areas raises serious health and safety concerns.

A spokesperson for the group emphasized that these projects have been pursued without adequate consideration for local residents’ rights. “Our rural communities are under siege,” the spokesperson remarked, underscoring the group’s commitment to defending public health and the environment against what they view as irresponsible development.

The Limerick Communities Alliance aims to present a united front in advocating for sustainable practices and accountability from decision-makers. They argue that the wind turbines could negatively impact both the environment and the quality of life for residents in the surrounding areas.

As the protest approaches, the group is mobilizing support from the local community. They are urging residents to join in solidarity to ensure that their voices are heard regarding the future of wind energy developments in Limerick County.
