Limerick Women to Explore Politics at Free Community Event
The Women’s Collective Ireland in Limerick is set to host an engaging community event on November 5, 2023, designed to enhance women’s understanding of political processes and encourage civic involvement. The event, entitled Making Sense of Political Nonsense, will take place at the Absolute Hotel from 18:00 to 21:00 and is open to all women in the area.
Following the success of their recent Money Matters for Women event, the Women’s Collective is shifting its focus toward political literacy. The session will feature expert speakers who will shed light on the workings of local and national governments, as well as the functions of organizations like the Electoral Commission.
Participants will be encouraged to ask questions ranging from basic concepts such as “What is a Ceann Comhairle?” to specifics about local council services. The organizers emphasize that no question is too trivial, framing the event as a valuable opportunity for women to learn and engage with political topics.
Yvie Murphy, the Coordinator of Women’s Collective Ireland – Limerick, expressed the necessity of such events. “When politics is discussed in the media, there is often an assumption that everyone has a foundational understanding. But what if someone does not? If I hear something on the radio that I don’t understand, I might turn it off and disengage,” she noted. Murphy highlighted that many women wish to learn about the political system but often feel unsure about how to start.
The event will also address the Irish political landscape from a migrant perspective, aiming to make politics more inclusive and accessible for all women in the community. This effort aligns with the organization’s mission to empower women and promote greater representation in civic life.
The event is free, but spaces are limited, requiring participants to book in advance. Interested individuals can reserve their spots by contacting Women’s Collective Ireland – Limerick at 087-3283746 or via email at [email protected]. With a commitment to fostering understanding and participation, this community gathering promises to be an enlightening experience for all attendees.
