Mayor Allocates €75,000 for Green Space Upgrade on Island Road

Mayor John Moran has announced a funding initiative of €75,000 to enhance green space along the historic site of Limerick’s original city wall on Island Road. This investment, sourced from his discretionary Mayoral Fund, aims to address the funding gap necessary for the project’s commencement within the current year.

The planned upgrade will introduce a “nature-based solution” designed to protect and enrich the existing green space adjacent to the historic wall. This initiative is part of a broader strategy for the revitalization of King’s Island, which includes significant infrastructure projects such as the ongoing flood protection scheme and the comprehensive King John’s Castle Masterplan.

Community Benefits and Innovative Design

According to the Mayor, this project aligns with the More for Limerick programme, which focuses on improving local amenities and public spaces in King’s Island. “We have a broad strategy in place to enhance the surrounding areas and provide better amenities,” Mayor Moran stated. “This project is a step forward towards actioning that plan. It improves access to and enjoyment of our historic walls for young and old alike.”

The development aims to create a natural play area and park intended for children at the nearby St Mary’s National School as well as the wider community. A key feature of the design includes redirecting surface water from the adjacent road into the new landscape park, rather than allowing it to flow directly into the sewer system. This innovative approach will enable the landscape to store water beneath gravel layers, promoting hydration for planting beds.

Moreover, the project will incorporate “rain gardens” that foster local wildlife by providing food and shelter for various animals and insects.

In expressing enthusiasm for the project, Eoghan O’Byrne, principal of St Mary’s National School, emphasized the transformative impact it will have on the school environment. “We are thrilled to see the exciting development of a new fosse along Island Road,” O’Byrne remarked. “This transformative project, made possible through the generous support of Limerick City and County Council and the Mayoral Fund, represents a significant step forward in enhancing our school’s surroundings and contributing to the ecological health of our community.”
