Michael McGrath Supports Micheál Martin Ahead of EU Presidency
European Commissioner Michael McGrath has expressed strong support for Micheál Martin, asserting that his continued leadership of Fianna Fáil is essential as Ireland prepares to assume the presidency of the European Union in 2024. McGrath underscored Martin’s extensive experience, which he believes will significantly benefit Ireland during this critical period.
The backing comes in the wake of scrutiny surrounding Martin’s leadership, particularly following the party’s disappointing presidential campaign. The campaign faced controversy when the party’s candidate, former Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) manager Jim Gavin, withdrew amid revelations that he owed a former tenant money for several years. This incident has raised questions about the selection process, which is currently undergoing a review that has been delayed, causing ongoing frustrations within the party.
In his remarks, McGrath emphasized Martin’s resilience and capability in navigating complex political landscapes. He stated, “I think anybody who underestimates Micheál Martin will do so at their peril.” His confidence stems from witnessing Martin’s effectiveness in various situations, particularly in his interactions with member states and European institutions.
Significance of the EU Presidency
McGrath highlighted the upcoming EU presidency as a prime opportunity for Ireland to showcase its leadership and policy-making capabilities. “The presidency of the Council of the European Union is a tremendous opportunity,” he noted, adding that Martin’s decades of experience will be invaluable in setting the agenda at the EU level.
While McGrath clarified that he is no longer affiliated with the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party, he mentioned that the review into the presidential campaign is nearing completion. He anticipates it will be presented to the parliamentary party soon after its finalization. McGrath remarked on the importance of learning from past mistakes, stating, “It’s always a good idea to look back when something goes wrong and try to understand the full circumstances and the context.”
As Ireland prepares for its leadership role within the EU, the party’s internal challenges and the outcome of the review will play a crucial role in shaping its political landscape. McGrath’s support for Martin reflects a commitment to stability and experience as Ireland navigates its responsibilities on the European stage.
