A significant step forward has been made in the development of a new playground and neighbourhood park in Caherdavin, as the Parish Field has been officially designated as the project site. Local Fine Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, which aims to enhance recreational spaces for the growing community in the area.

Cllr O’Sullivan announced that discussions regarding the establishment of the new Caherdavin Playground are progressing well. She highlighted the importance of creating not just a playground, but a fully developed neighbourhood park that meets the needs of local residents. “There won’t just be a playground, but a neighbourhood park developed for the local community, something that has been lacking in this area for its growing population,” she noted in a conversation with the Limerick Post.

Funding for the project has been secured, with €410,000 allocated specifically for the playground. This includes an initial contribution of €100,000 from the Northside councillors of the previous Council term, who supported Cllr O’Sullivan’s proposal. She assured that all of this ring-fenced funding will be dedicated to the playground and park initiative.

Community Engagement and Support

The Parish Field has been identified as an ideal location due to its accessibility and proximity to various community facilities, including local primary schools, the church, and the scout hall. Cllr O’Sullivan emphasized, “This area is already a centre of local activity. The schools have been consulted and are supportive.” The involvement of local organizations is crucial, with Caherdavin Celtic FC already utilizing the Parish Field for training purposes. Cllr O’Sullivan confirmed that the football club has been consulted to ensure collaboration between all stakeholders and the Council.

Acknowledging the support from various parties, Cllr O’Sullivan extended her gratitude to the Limerick Diocese and Fr. Pat O’Sullivan of Christ the King Parish Caherdavin, stating, “Without the Diocese’s agreement, this project would not be possible.” She also thanked those from the Limerick City and County Council Parks Department for their efforts in bringing the plans to fruition.

Future Developments and Improvements

The planned project includes enhancements to improve access and safety at the Redgate Road entrance, as well as the creation of a car park area. The Council had previously identified two other potential locations for the Caherdavin Playground, which were later deemed unsuitable. With this third location, Cllr O’Sullivan hopes that the community will find the wait worthwhile.

She reflected on the lengthy process of securing funding and working with the Council, stating, “It has taken us a long time to get here. I have been fundraising for six years and collaborating with the Council to see this progress.” Cllr O’Sullivan believes that, if managed properly, the Parish Field will become a vibrant park and recreational amenity for the locality.

The community eagerly anticipates the transformation of the Parish Field into a new playground and park, which promises to enrich the lives of residents in Caherdavin.
