Taoiseach Welcomes Trump to Ireland for 2026 Irish Open

Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that US President Donald Trump would be welcome in Ireland for the 2026 Irish Open, taking place at the Trump Organization’s golf course in Doonbeg, County Clare. This announcement came on the same day the DP World Tour revealed that the prestigious tournament is scheduled for September 10-13, 2026.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Martin emphasized the importance of the US-Ireland relationship. “Economically, it supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in this country,” he noted. He further elaborated on the cultural ties, highlighting the deep connections between the two nations, particularly through the Irish diaspora. “In that context, there’s no question that President Trump would be welcome,” he stated.
Significance of the Event for Ireland
The Irish Open’s return to County Clare is anticipated to have significant economic implications. The last time the tournament was held in the area, at Lahinch in 2019, it attracted over 100,000 visitors and generated substantial social and media impact, according to Clare County Council. The council’s Chief Executive, Gordon Daly, expressed optimism, stating the event is expected to boost the local economy and support job creation.
Trump’s golf resort has played a central role in the local community, with Martin acknowledging the varied opinions surrounding Trump’s presidency. “There will be differences of opinion in terms of issues and conflicts,” he said, affirming the importance of facilitating protests while also maintaining strong international relations. “We should continue to support that relationship because it puts bread on the table for a lot of Irish people,” he added.
Reactions from the Trump Organization
In a statement, Eric Trump, Executive Vice President of The Trump Organization and the president’s son, expressed pride in hosting the event. “This tournament is one of the most celebrated events in golf, and bringing it to Trump Ireland is a true testament to the standard of excellence that’s upheld at this property,” he remarked.
Joe Russell, General Manager of Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Ireland, also highlighted the significance of the occasion. “This moment reflects the vision of the local community, who first championed the development of this resort,” he said, adding that the course offers a true test for golfers due to its rugged Atlantic setting.
As preparations for the 2026 Irish Open begin, the event is poised to reinforce the cultural and economic ties between Ireland and the United States, highlighting the enduring relationship that transcends political differences. With the tournament fast approaching, both local officials and the Trump Organization are gearing up for what promises to be a remarkable showcase of international golf.
