UK Festival Cuts Mary Wallopers’ Set Over Disputed Chant
The Irish band The Mary Wallopers had their performance at the Victorious Festival in Portsmouth abruptly terminated following allegations that they used a chant described as having a “discriminatory context.” The incident occurred on the evening of August 22, 2023, as the band displayed a Palestinian flag during their set.
Festival organizers emphasized that the decision to cut the band’s sound was not due to the flag itself but rather to the content of the chant used during the performance. A spokesperson clarified that prior to the show, the band had been informed of the festival’s policy prohibiting flags. While the flag was displayed, it was stated that the performance continued until the band employed a chant deemed controversial.
In response to their set being cut off, The Mary Wallopers expressed their disappointment on social media, stating, “We’ve been doing this for six years now and this has never happened before. Free Palestine all day, every day.” The band highlighted the political significance of their message, which has become a focal point in discussions surrounding global human rights.
The situation drew further attention when the rap trio Kneecap shared images of the band on social media, expressing solidarity. They remarked, “Speak up against genocide in England and you’re treated like a criminal. Up the Mary Wallopers. Free Palestine! Free the 6 counties!”
Despite the controversy, the festival organizers reiterated their commitment to inclusivity. They acknowledged the right of artists to express their views but stressed that the decision to end the performance was based on the chant used by the band. The spokesperson specified, “To be clear, we respect the right of artists to use their platform to express their views within the inclusive nature of the event.”
As the situation unfolded, The Mary Wallopers shared a video capturing the crowd’s reaction, which included footage of them holding the Palestinian flag on stage. The incident has sparked discussions about freedom of expression at public events and the complexities surrounding political statements in artistic performances.
The festival, known for its diverse lineup and vibrant atmosphere, now faces scrutiny over its policies regarding political expression. As conversations continue to evolve, the incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between artistic freedom and community guidelines in public performances.
