UK Seeks to Host Super Bowl as Mandelson Makes Ambitious Pitch

Peter Mandelson, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, has proposed that the UK host the first Super Bowl outside the United States. Speaking at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Mandelson revealed his concerted efforts to bring the National Football League’s flagship event to Britain since he assumed his role in February. His enthusiasm was evident as he stated, “I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don’t care when it takes place but I want it announced while I’m ambassador.”
Mandelson’s remarks were met with laughter and applause from the audience, indicating a positive reception to his ambitions. He emphasized the cultural significance of the event, stating, “We love it, we love it.” His comments come in the wake of London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s previous calls for the Super Bowl to be held in the city, which Khan believes would reinforce London’s status as the “sporting capital of the world.”
Potential Economic Impact and Local Support
Khan highlighted the importance of the Super Bowl for the UK, noting, “We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America.” The Super Bowl is not just a sporting event; it represents a significant economic opportunity, drawing in fans and media from around the globe.
In October, London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is set to host two NFL games, further increasing the city’s profile in American football. Despite Mandelson’s ambitions, the next Super Bowl is scheduled for February 8, 2024, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. This will mark the continuation of a long-standing tradition, as the Super Bowl has not been held outside the U.S. since its inception in 1967.
Challenges and Other Sporting Aspirations
While the push for the Super Bowl in the UK is gaining traction, there are logistical and commercial considerations that may impede this goal. Notably, Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, has expressed interest in bringing the Open Championship to his father’s Turnberry golf course in Scotland. However, golf tournament organizers have indicated that such a move is unlikely due to similar logistical challenges.
Mandelson’s ambition for the Super Bowl highlights a broader desire among UK officials to elevate the country’s status in international sports. As discussions continue, the outcome of these proposals will likely depend on various factors, including venue readiness and the NFL’s willingness to expand its global footprint.
The push for hosting the Super Bowl represents a significant step in the UK’s efforts to attract more American sporting events, which could have far-reaching implications for tourism and local economies.
