Wendy’s Set to Open in Cork with Mixed Reviews from Americans
Ireland is preparing for the opening of its first-ever Wendy’s restaurant, slated to launch in October 2023 at the Mahon Point Shopping Centre in Cork. This milestone marks a significant development in the Irish fast-food landscape, as the franchise boasts a reputation for its square hamburgers and Frosty desserts. However, an American couple, YouTubers Joey and Lauren, have voiced some reservations regarding the popular fast-food chain’s offerings.
While visiting Cork, Joey and Lauren shared their insights based on their extensive experience with Wendy’s, which has nearly 6,000 locations across the United States. They discussed their recent encounter with a traditional Irish food item, the chicken fillet roll, from Dunnes Stores. Joey remarked on the differences between the two, suggesting that if they were craving a lighter meal, they would opt for the chicken fillet roll. He stated, “We would prefer Wendy’s if we are super hungry and looking for a quick tasty meal – even if our stomach feels a bit overwhelmed by the end of it.”
The impact of Wendy’s arrival in Ireland extends beyond the menu, as it is expected to create up to 50 new jobs in the local area. Justin Young, director of Mahon Point Shopping Centre, expressed enthusiasm about the opening, describing it as a unique opportunity for the community. He stated, “This opening is great news for Cork – not only does it create 50 new local jobs, but it also gives people the opportunity to enjoy the craveable, high-quality food Wendy’s is famous for.”
In their discussion about Wendy’s, Lauren highlighted one of their favorite menu items: the Biggie Bag, which typically includes a burger or chicken sandwich, chicken nuggets, fries, and a drink for around $5 in the U.S. She noted, “It’s a decent deal, especially since fast food seems to have gone up in price quite a bit.” Additionally, she praised the Frosty dessert, describing it as a blend of ice cream and milkshake.
Despite their enthusiasm for certain items, Joey and Lauren also expressed criticism regarding some offerings. They were particularly uncomplimentary about the saucy nuggets, likening them to “low quality boneless wings.” Such mixed reviews underscore the differing expectations that may exist as Wendy’s makes its debut in Ireland.
Wendy’s is entering the Irish market through a partnership with Corrib Oil, which is indicative of the brand’s strategy to expand its reach internationally. The Cork location will serve as a test case for how Wendy’s adapts to local tastes while maintaining its American roots.
As the opening date approaches, the local community is eager to see how Wendy’s will be received. With its mix of American fast-food culture and local culinary traditions, the Cork restaurant aims to attract both nostalgic Americans and curious locals looking to explore new dining options.
